How early can you start icing/decorating a birthday cake?

generally you give a cake 6 hours before you ice it as it gives the cake time to cool and settle so you can apply pressure on the cake with out it sinking, if that makes sense, but after 6 hours, it should be fine and firm enough. i hope this has helped.
