Help with this really hot but really shy guy?

Alright so there is this guy at my school, he is the captain of the basketball team (I'm a high schooler) he's tall and EXTREMELY attractive, all of the girls like him but the thing is, he is really really shy. I want to get to know him better and maybe see if he has dating potential, but he is so damn shy how do I like find out what kind of person he is. I think it would be easier to just go up and talk to him, but he is so good looking he is still intimidating to talk to. What exactly should I do? Any tips that would help me out? Thanks a ton.
